FOR his undergraduate final year project, engineering student Tan Jiun Ian (pic) designed an ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna that can be used to track metallic objects, especially for electronic packaging applications.

His endeavour won the approval of the international Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Electronics Packaging Society (EPS) Malaysia chapter, which recently conferred him the Best Engineering Student Award (BESA) 2021.

The award came with an RM3,000 prize money for Tan, currently a master of engineering science student at the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (FES) at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

“I would like to express my utmost thanks to my research supervisor Prof Dr Lim Eng Hock and my co-supervisor Dr Lee Yong Hong – both from FES – for assisting and guiding me throughout the development of my research.
